How to Repair Sun Damage: Treatments That Actually Work

What is the Best Way to Repair Sun Damage

If you have lived in Charleston for any length of time, your skin has had more sun than you think. Humid summers pull people outdoors, the reflection off water and sand adds to it, and a lot of that exposure happens without anyone feeling burned. The damage shows up years later.

The good news is that most of it can be improved. Here is what sun damage actually is, and what works to reverse it.

What Sun Damage Looks Like

Hyperpigmentation is the broad term for skin that has darkened in patches. From the sun, it tends to show up as freckles, age spots and blotchy areas across the forehead, cheeks and upper lip.

Melasma deserves its own mention. It appears as larger, symmetrical patches and is triggered by hormones as well as sunlight, which is why it is more common in women and often appears during pregnancy or on hormonal contraception. It can be managed very well, but it has no permanent cure and tends to return without ongoing care.

Sun damage is not only about color. UVA rays break down collagen, so the same exposure that creates spots also produces fine lines, enlarged pores, rough texture and loss of firmness.

Start With Prevention

Nothing we do in the clinic will outpace daily sun exposure. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, reapplied every two hours outdoors and after swimming, is the foundation. Add a hat, sunglasses, sun-protective clothing, and shade during the middle of the day.

Sun-protective clothing is worth singling out, because unlike sunscreen, it does not wash off.

At-Home Treatments

Retinoids

Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that speed up cell turnover. They even skin tone, fade brown spots and stimulate collagen, which also makes them one of the most effective anti-aging ingredients there is. Results take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months depending on strength. Our guide to retinoids explains how to start without irritation.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone slows the enzyme that produces pigment, turning down overactive melanocytes so spots gradually fade. It is now a prescription ingredient in the United States. Paired with a retinoid and daily sunscreen, it is one of the most effective combinations for pigment. Our complete guide to hydroquinone covers how to use it safely.

Vitamin C

A vitamin C serum in the morning is an antioxidant that helps neutralize the free radicals sun exposure creates, brightens tone, and boosts the protection your sunscreen provides. It works best alongside the two ingredients above rather than instead of them.

In-Office Treatments

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel uses acids to remove the outer layer of damaged skin cells, lifting surface pigment and improving tone and texture. A medium-depth peel can be adapted to every skin type and ethnicity, while a lighter peel suits sensitive skin. Expect a few days of flaking and a visibly brighter complexion within about a week.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Fractional laser resurfacing creates microscopic channels in the skin while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. That triggers the body’s healing response, clearing damaged cells and stimulating new collagen. It reaches deeper than a peel and suits more widespread or stubborn damage. Most people need a series of three or four sessions.

Microneedling

Microneedling is better at texture than pigment, but it is valuable for the rough, uneven skin and enlarged pores that long-term sun exposure leaves behind.

What to Expect, Realistically

Sun damage builds over years and it does not reverse in a weekend. Most people see a real difference within two to three months of combining a good at-home routine with a series of in-office treatments. Melasma takes longer and needs maintenance for good.

Treatments also work far better on skin that is not being freshly damaged at the same time. Timing matters: many in-office treatments are best scheduled outside the peak of summer, when your skin is less likely to meet intense sun straight afterwards.

Do Not Skip the Skin Check

Some changes caused by the sun are not cosmetic. A spot that is new, changing, irregular in shape or color, or that bleeds, needs a dermatologist rather than a peel. An annual skin check is worth booking regardless. We explain why in our post on melanoma awareness.
